Bring Your Own Twilio

What is BYOT?

Connect your own Twilio account and pay Twilio directly for the SMS and AI voice calls Cartio sends. You keep full visibility of messaging costs. We handle the cart recovery.

How BYOT works

Three steps, and your recovery messages start going out on your own account.

Step 1

Create a Twilio account

Sign up with Twilio directly, verify your business, and buy a sending number for the countries you serve.

Step 2

Connect it to Cartio

Paste your Account SID, Auth Token and sending number into Cartio settings. Credentials are encrypted at rest.

Step 3

Recovery runs as normal

Cartio sends your SMS and AI voice recovery through your Twilio account. Twilio bills you; we bill only for the platform.

Why merchants choose BYOT

It suits stores that want to own the messaging layer outright.

Cost transparency

Every call and message appears on your own Twilio bill at their published rate. Nothing is bundled or rounded up.

Direct billing

You pay Twilio, we charge only for the Cartio platform. Two clean line items instead of one blended fee.

Your numbers, your sender identity

Keep the sending numbers and caller ID you have already warmed up and registered.

Room to negotiate

As your volume grows you deal with Twilio directly on rates, rather than through a reseller.

Is BYOT right for your store?

A good fit if you

  • Already run a Twilio account for other messaging
  • Send a high monthly volume of SMS or voice
  • Want messaging costs itemised for finance
  • Have someone comfortable managing Twilio billing

Bundled messaging is simpler if you

  • Are just getting started with cart recovery
  • Prefer a single predictable monthly invoice
  • Do not want to manage a separate provider account
  • Send modest volumes where admin outweighs savings

Not sure which works out cheaper at your volume? Send us your monthly numbers and we will run the comparison with you.

BYOT questions

Frequently asked questions

What is BYOT?

BYOT stands for Bring Your Own Twilio. Instead of buying messaging through Cartio as part of a bundle, you connect your own Twilio account. Cartio sends your cart recovery SMS and AI voice calls through it, and Twilio bills you directly at their published rates.

Do I still need a Cartio plan?

Yes. Your Cartio plan covers the recovery platform itself: the AI, the automations, the dashboard and support. BYOT only changes who you pay for the underlying calls and messages.

Is BYOT cheaper than bundled messaging?

It depends on your volume and the countries you message. BYOT gives you Twilio pricing with no bundling, plus the ability to negotiate directly with Twilio as you scale. At lower volumes the convenience of a bundled plan often wins. Talk to us with your numbers and we will tell you honestly which is better for you.

What happens if my Twilio account runs out of credit?

Recovery messages stop sending until the account is topped up. With BYOT you own that relationship, so we recommend enabling auto-recharge and billing alerts inside Twilio.

Can I switch between BYOT and bundled messaging later?

Yes. You can connect or disconnect your Twilio credentials at any time from your Cartio settings, and switch back to bundled messaging without losing your recovery history or configuration.

Which channels does BYOT cover?

SMS and AI voice calls, which are the channels Twilio powers. WhatsApp and email are handled separately and are not affected by BYOT.
