of online shopping carts are abandoned before checkout completes.
This guide is about the 20–30% you can win back.
What you'll learn
8 chapters covering everything from psychology to dashboard metrics.
Why customers abandon carts
The 7 reasons carts get abandoned, what data says, and which ones you can actually influence with recovery messaging.
The four pillars of recovery
Timing, channel, message, and incentive. Master these four and you outperform 80% of stores.
Timing playbook
When to send the first message, the gap between attempts, and when to stop. Real numbers from production data.
Channel mix
WhatsApp first, SMS second, AI calls for high-value carts. Why this order, and how to gate channels by cart value.
Discount strategy
When to offer a discount, how much, and how to avoid training customers to abandon-then-wait for one.
Measuring success
The five metrics that matter, what good looks like, and how to read your dashboard like an analyst.
Customer psychology
What makes someone come back, what scares them away, and the language that converts hesitation into checkout.
Pitfalls to avoid
The seven mistakes that destroy recovery rates and how to spot them before they cost you revenue.
Chapter 01
Why customers abandon carts
Cart abandonment isn't a single problem — it's seven different ones, each with a different fix. Understanding the breakdown matters because some reasons are addressable through recovery messaging (came back later, got distracted) while others require fixing your checkout itself (forced account, long form).

Chapter 02
The four pillars of recovery
Timing
When you send. The first 30 minutes is gold; after 48 hours the cart is essentially cold.
Channel
Where you reach them. WhatsApp gets read; email often doesn't; SMS is universal but feels less personal.
Message
What you say. Tone, length, personalization, and a single clear call-to-action all compound.
Incentive
What you offer. Discounts work, but offered too early they train customers to abandon-then-wait.

Chapter 04
Channel mix
Highest of any channel. Lead here when the customer has WhatsApp.
Universal reach. Use as fallback when WhatsApp delivery fails.
Most personal channel. Reserve for high-value carts ($100+).
The right order is WhatsApp → SMS → Call. WhatsApp first because of read rates and 2-way conversation. SMS as fallback for non-WhatsApp users. Calls last and only for carts that justify the cost (and customer friction). Cartio's default flow encodes this exact order.
Chapter 05
Discount strategy
Don't lead with a discount
First message is just a friendly nudge. If you offer a discount in the first message, you train customers to abandon-then-wait.
Offer the discount on attempt 2 or 3
By then, the customer has clearly hesitated. A 10–15% nudge is often enough to push them back.
Use single-use codes
Codes that work once and only for that customer. Public codes get shared and gamed.
Time-bound the offer
"Code expires in 24 hours" creates real urgency. Open-ended discounts don't convert.
Match discount to margin
A 30% discount on a 25% margin product is a loss. Calculate the math before setting the rate.
The biggest unlock
The single highest-leverage thing you can do is connect WhatsApp. Stores that switch from email-only recovery to WhatsApp-first see recovery rates jump from 5–8% to 20–30% — a 3–4x improvement, with no changes to messaging or timing.
Apply this guide in Cartio
Cartio implements every principle in this guide out-of-the-box. Connect Shopify and the default flow handles WhatsApp → SMS → Call with optimal timing.
