Quick wins (do these today)

1

Activate the default flow

It's already optimized — don't over-customize on day one.

2

Set abandonment threshold to 15 min

Most stores get the best balance at this value.

3

Connect WhatsApp first

Highest leverage channel by far.

4

Submit one approved template

Get it APPROVED before launching to avoid blocked sends.

5

Enable single-use discount codes

Toggle ON, set 10–15% with 24h expiry.

6

Watch the dashboard for a week

See what's working before tweaking anything.

Get the timing right

First message at 15–30 minutes

Too early and customers are still actively typing. Too late and they've moved on. The sweet spot is 15–30 minutes after abandonment.

Wait 2 hours between attempts

Multiple messages back-to-back feels like spam. A 2-hour gap respects the customer's decision space.

Stop after 24–48 hours

Recovery rate drops sharply after 48 hours. Three attempts is usually the right cap; more annoys than recovers.

Write messages people actually read

Personalize the opening

Use {{customer_name}} — "Hey Sarah" beats "Dear customer" every time. Cartio fills this in automatically.

Reference what they left behind

Mention the cart, not specific SKUs. "Your cart is waiting" lands better than "1x Black T-Shirt size M is waiting."

One clear call-to-action

A single button or link beats a wall of options. The whole point is to get them back to checkout — keep it simple.

Drop the urgency theater

"LAST CHANCE!!! HURRY!!!" reads as desperate. Calm confidence ("Your cart is still here whenever you're ready") converts better with most audiences.

Pick the right channel mix

WhatsApp first if available

Highest open rate (~95%) and the most personal of the messaging channels. Cartio defaults to WhatsApp on stages where the customer has WhatsApp.

SMS as fallback, not primary

SMS works everywhere but feels less personal. Use it when WhatsApp delivery fails or the customer doesn't have WhatsApp.

AI calls for high-value carts only

Calls have the highest conversion but the highest friction. Reserve them for cart values above a threshold (e.g., $100+) — use a CONDITION node to gate them.

Use discounts strategically

Don't lead with a discount

If your first message offers 10% off, you've trained customers to abandon-then-wait. Save discounts for the second or third attempt.

Single-use codes

Cartio auto-generates RF-XXXXXX codes that work once and only for the customer they were sent to. Public codes get shared and abused.

Time-bound the discount

Set the expiry to 24–48 hours. "10% off, expires in 24 hours" creates real urgency without being pushy.

Match discount to margin

Don't offer 30% off products with 25% margin. Calculate your CAC vs. the discount cost — if you're recovering at a loss, dial down or skip the discount.

Segment by customer behavior

First-time vs. returning customers

Returning customers usually need a softer nudge. First-time customers may need more reassurance about your store. Use CONDITION nodes to branch.

Cart value tiers

A $20 cart and a $500 cart shouldn't get the same treatment. Higher-value carts justify AI calls; lower-value carts shouldn't consume call budget.

Engagement-based exit

Use "Customer Replied?" CONDITION to skip remaining attempts if the customer is already in conversation. Hammering them while they're engaged is counterproductive.

Stay compliant

Honor STOP / unsubscribe

Cartio auto-detects opt-out keywords (STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE) and stops the flow. Don't override this in your custom flows.

Add an opt-in disclosure at checkout

A small note like "By providing your phone number, you agree to receive cart recovery messages" covers your bases for most jurisdictions.

Keep WhatsApp templates clean

Aggressive marketing language can get your WhatsApp number's quality rating dropped to YELLOW or RED. Conservative wording protects deliverability.

Respect the recovery window

Cartio enforces a 60-hour cap — after that, the cart is no longer eligible for outreach. Don't try to bypass this; older outreach feels invasive and tanks reputation.

Common pitfalls to avoid

Sending too soon (under 5 min)

Cost: Catches customers still on the page = false positives + annoyance

No SMS fallback configured

Cost: WhatsApp delivery fails ≈ 30% of the time. Without SMS, you lose those carts entirely.

Aggressive promo language

Cost: WhatsApp template rejection or quality rating drop

Discounting from the first message

Cost: Trains customers to abandon-then-wait for a deal

Same flow for $20 and $500 carts

Cost: Wastes call budget on low-value carts; under-invests on high-value ones

Ignoring quality rating drops

Cost: YELLOW → RED leads to severe throttling, sometimes permanent

Benchmarks to aim for

These are realistic targets for a well-tuned cart recovery setup. If you're below, the practices on this page will get you there.

20–35%
Recovery rate

Carts recovered out of total abandoned

95%+
WhatsApp open rate

Customers who actually see the message

<3%
Opt-out rate

Customers asking to stop

5–10x
ROI

Revenue recovered vs. message cost

The meta-tip

Don't guess — measure. The dashboard shows recovery rate, channel performance, and per-stage drop-off. Tweak ONE thing at a time and watch the numbers for a week. Most stores get the biggest gains from timing changes, not message rewrites.
