Conversations

Customers can reply — Cartio routes the conversation

Before you start

You'll need

  • • A Facebook account (for the Meta Business Portfolio)
  • • A business email address
  • • A phone number not currently on WhatsApp (or willing to migrate from Personal/Business app)
  • • Cartio admin access (Settings + WhatsApp pages)

4-step setup

1

Create a Meta Business account

5 minutes
1
Visit business.facebook.com and sign in with a Facebook account
2
Create a Business Portfolio (your company name)
3
Add your business phone number and email
4
Verify ownership (Meta sends a verification code via SMS)

Tip: Use a phone number that you control 24/7 — it's where Meta will send all template approval and quality alerts.

2

Connect WhatsApp via Cartio OAuth

3 minutes
1
In Cartio dashboard, open the WhatsApp page
2
Click "Connect WhatsApp Business" — this opens Meta's embedded sign-in flow
3
Select the Business Portfolio you just created
4
Choose or create a WhatsApp Business Account (WABA)
5
Pick the phone number to associate with WhatsApp messaging
6
Approve the permissions Cartio requests (read/write messages, read templates)

Tip: OAuth handles the token securely — Cartio stores an encrypted access token, never your Meta password.

3

Submit a message template for approval

5 minutes
1
In Cartio's WhatsApp page, go to "Templates"
2
Click "Create Template" — pre-filled cart-recovery templates are available
3
Customize the body text — keep variables like {{1}}, {{2}} that Cartio will fill in at send time
4
Set category to "Marketing" (for recovery messages)
5
Submit for Meta review — usually approved within 1–24 hours

Tip: Avoid promotional language that's too aggressive (e.g., "BUY NOW!!!") — it can trigger rejection. Friendly nudges work better.

4

Run a test send

2 minutes
1
Once your template shows status APPROVED in Cartio, click "Send Test Message"
2
Enter a phone number you can check (must be on WhatsApp)
3
You should receive the templated message within seconds
4
If nothing arrives in 1 minute, check delivery webhooks in the dashboard

Understanding message templates

Meta requires every business-initiated WhatsApp message to use a pre-approved template. The template defines the structure; Cartio fills in the variables at send time. There are 3 categories:

Marketing

Recovery messages. Higher friction with Meta — they monitor opt-in and quality. Use for first-touch outreach.

Utility

Order updates, shipping notifications. Easier to get approved and cheaper per send.

Authentication

OTPs, two-factor codes. Not used for cart recovery.

Cartio ships with a default cart_recovery Marketing template you can submit as-is or customize.

Delivery best practices

Personalize without being creepy

Use {{customer_name}} but skip referencing exact products by SKU. Aim for "you left items in your cart" rather than "you left 1x Black T-Shirt size M".

Don't over-message

Meta tracks per-recipient frequency. More than 2 marketing templates per customer per week and quality drops.

Honor opt-outs

If a customer replies STOP, Cartio automatically marks them OPTED_OUT and stops the flow. Don't fight it.

Watch the quality rating

Meta Business Manager shows your phone number's quality (Green/Yellow/Red). Yellow = warning, Red = throttled. Improve content if you see degradation.

Pair with SMS fallback

Some numbers aren't on WhatsApp. Cartio has a 2-hour fallback timer that switches to SMS automatically.

Use a recognizable sender name

Set your WhatsApp Business display name to your store name (not "Cartio") — recipients trust familiar brands.

Troubleshooting

Logs say "message sent" but the customer didn't receive it

Meta returning a wamid means they accepted the message into their queue — not that it was delivered. Common reasons for non-delivery: the recipient's number isn't on WhatsApp, the template is in PENDING/REJECTED status, the customer never opted in for marketing, or Meta's anti-spam filters held the message. Check Meta Business Manager → WhatsApp Manager for delivery status of the wamid.

Template stuck in PENDING for over 24 hours

Meta's automated review usually takes minutes; manual review can take 1–7 days during high traffic. If your template isn't too aggressive (no all-caps, no exaggerated claims), it'll usually go through. Try submitting a similar but rephrased version if it's stuck.

"Phone number quality rating dropped to RED"

Meta throttles or blocks numbers with too many user-reports/blocks. Causes: aggressive copy, sending to numbers that don't opt in, sending too frequently. Pause marketing sends, focus on customer support replies for 7 days, and the rating usually recovers.

OAuth connection fails on the Cartio WhatsApp page

Most common cause: the Facebook account doesn't own the Business Portfolio you're trying to connect. Make sure you're logged into the Facebook account that created (or has admin access to) the Business Portfolio with the WhatsApp Business Account.

Important: opt-in compliance

Meta requires you to have explicit opt-in to send marketing messages. The customer entering their phone number at checkout typically counts in most jurisdictions, but you should add a clear opt-in checkbox/disclosure on your checkout page mentioning that you'll send recovery messages.

Ready to connect?

Once your template is APPROVED, Cartio can start sending recovery messages immediately on the next abandoned cart.
